Video: Water Challenges in the Marshall Islands 28 May, 2010

Dren: Water supply issues in the Marshall Islands from Pacific Water on Vimeo.

A new video from the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) highlights the threats to water supply in the country from El Nino events, droughts and sanitation issues.

The atolls that comprise RMI have small freshwater lenses and access to this water is limited. Currently on the main island of Majuro, the government is only able to supply water one day a week, the rest of the time the inhabitants have to fend for themselves. They do this by using stored water for drinking and well water for non potable needs.

This 27 minute film includes interviews with people from government departments responsible for supplying and monitoring water quality and a series of moving interviews with members of the public discussing some of the hardships they face in getting their daily water supply.

It was produced by the Marshall Islands Conservation Society, in partnership with Computer Solutions – RMI. The video was made with the help and support from the Kora in Okrane (KIO) Club, Women United Together Marshall Islands (WUTMI), Economic Policy, Planning and Statistics Office (EPPSO), the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), College of the Marshal Islands (CMI) Land Grant, the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC), the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
