Water Loss Management Workshop; Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia
|
During October 2007, SOPAC and Wide By Water Corporation conducted the second of a series of training programs in water loss management under the NZAID funded Water Demand Management Program in Kolonia, State of Pohnpei within the Federated States of Micronesia. The training was attended by representatives of the other Micronesian States of Yap and Chuuk as well as representatives of the Marshall Islands water utilities of Majuro and Ebeye. The training content included the economics of water loss management, sectorisation, pressure management, pressure and flow logging and water auditing. The culmination of the training was to establish a water balance of the Kolonia system and prioritise areas for leak detection and repair programs.
Special emphasis during the training was placed on the establishment of logging points for the reticulation system. A pressure and flow logger was installed on a service reservoir to allow for determination of a minimum night flow. In the same DMA as the service reservoir three other loggers were installed to measure pressure and flow throughout the system (average zonal pressure and critical point pressure on the far end of the DMA). Training was conducted in interpretation of the data to understand the importance of loggers for system interrogation.
