Waste water Information, trainings, UNEP GPA
UNEP GPA Wastewater Training
The training has been jointly organised by UNEP’s Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA), the Institute for Water Education of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO-IHE), the Institute of Applied Science of the University of the South Pacific (IAS-USP), Secretariat for the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and SOPAC. Successful deliveries of the course “Improving Municipal Wastewater Management in Coastal Cities have been carried out in many parts of the world.
Using the United Nations Division of Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (UN/DOALOS) Train-Sea-Coast standards as well as the GPA Strategic Action Plan on Municipal Wastewater Management, the training provides participants with analytical tools, substantive information and skills on how to select plan and finance appropriate and environmentally sound municipal wastewater management systems.
The training is divided into 3 modules: objective oriented planning, conventional and innovative approaches to municipal wastewater management and presentation skills. The course comprised 5 days of specific training on wastewater management with a sixth consecutive day committed to ‘training of trainers’. The funding provided through GPA by the governments of the United States, Belgium and the Netherlands is gratefully acknowledged, without which this course would not have been possible.
Wastewater Technologies and Management for Pacific Islands
Background and Content
This CD-ROM is a collaborative effort of the UNESCO-IHE and UNEP/GPA training partnership, in short ‘TSC-GPA’, jointly with the Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Programme (SPREP), the Institute of Applied Science, University of the South Pacific (IAS-USP) and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC).
TSC-GPA is a Course Development Unit of the UN/DOALOS Train Sea Coast Programme; an UNDP-GEF funded capacity building initiative with global mandate. TSC-GPA offers management training for decision makers and practitioners at the municipal level to improve capacity to reduce the discharge of untreated wastewater and increase the number of people with access to sanitation http://www.training.gpa.unep.org.
A regional training needs analysis conducted by SOPAC revealed a need for an adaptation of the TSC material to the specific needs of the region with its distinct physical and population distribution.
To cater for this need, and with the aim to reach more experts in the many islands, this CD-ROM has been compiled to supplement existing training materials. It contains:
* a compendium of technologies appropriate for Pacific Islands;
* a tutorial in Project Cycle Management to identify feasible solutions;
* three software tools to support decision making; and
* a document library with 100 publications on management and technologies
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Office of Ocean Affairs in the United States Department of State to the funding of this CD-ROM and jointly with the Government of the Netherlands, to the training of experts in the Pacific region facilitated by UNEP, UNESCO, SPREP, USP and SOPAC.
